Eating My City, Eating Out Meat Free, Vegan

Winter Park’s Toasted Just May Have the Ultimate Vegan Grilled Cheese Sandwich

I really like grilled cheese sandwiches. Who doesn’t? It has to be one of the simplest dishes ever. It’s just bread and cheese. I especially like a great grilled cheese sandwich with a side of fries. Although my jury duty ended a day early, which meant that my meat-free food journey through downtown Orlando also had an early end, I decided to treat myself to one last day of eating out for lunch. I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted, but I knew that I just wanted something quick and simple. After going through my saved list of “places to try later” on Foursquare, I decided to go ahead and give Toasted a try. It had been sitting on that list untampered with for far too long.

Toasted offers exactly what its name suggests: a whole bunch of different kinds of toasted sandwiches, and what do you normally place between a toasted sandwich? Cheese, of course! I wasn’t able to get a picture of it, but one of the eatery’s walls is dedicated to a gigantic Periodic Table of Cheeses. It is epic!

Toasted’s menu is filled with various types of sandwiches including very “posh” grilled cheese sandwiches like the Truffle Melt, Fig & Goat, and Pesto Chicken. They also have burgers. But you’re not here to read about that. Let’s talk about their pretty-nice-sized vegan menu.

The vegan menu includes 4 grilled cheese options and 3 burger options. So, of course I had a pretty hard time making a decision. Even though I was only there for a grilled cheese sandwich, those 4 options still sent me into a 5-7 minute “I-have-no-idea-what-I-should-get” tailspin. A nice gentleman who overheard my decision-making issue, kindly suggested that I just order the entire menu. Instead of going with his suggestion, I wisely went with the recommendation of the young lady taking my order. It was going to be the Roasted Vegetable Grilled Cheese.

First, let’s talk about the vegan cheese. The vegan cheese is made in-house, which is great. Looking over the allergen information offered on Toasted’s website, it looks like the cheese may have coconut milk as its main ingredient. The cheese isn’t the only great thing about this sandwich. There were lots of veggies including portobello mushrooms, tomato chutney, and garlic spinach. The tomato chutney was a really nice addition because it added this surprising sweetness to the sandwich that I was not expecting. One thing that I will say about this sandwich is that it was REALLY cheesy. I usually like a more thin layer of cheese, but the amount of cheese to put on a grilled cheese sandwich is pretty subjective.

Before I sign off, I must give a quick shot out to the truffle oil and rosemary fries. They were EVERYTHING! Reading through the tips on Foursquare, there were few that didn’t mention the amazingness of these fries. Allow me to concur: they are really good! Be sure to check out the pictures below for more detailed information about my visit.

Here is my Roasted Vegetable Grilled Cheese Sandwich up close and personal. The veggies are literally spilling out of the sandwich. I think that is a pretty good sign! Portobello mushrooms, tomato chutney, and garlic spinach were stuffed in with the house-made vegan cheese.

Okay, so these are the amazing fries! They are sprinkled with truffle oil and fresh rosemary. Sounds simple, right? Simply delicious!
