Thai Place: I Went for the Pad Thai But Fell for the Tofu Satay

From the first moment that I tried pad thai, I loved it. In the early days, my pad thai dish would always come topped with chicken. These days, I still love pad thai, just sans the meat. So, after hearing about how awesome Winter Park’s Thai Place was, I was really excited to try their pad thai… with tofu just for me!

Sticky noodles. Sweet, tangy sauce. Crushed peanuts. Crispy veggies. There is absolutely no reason to not like pad thai. To be honest, I can’t even trust a person if he/she doesn’t have the same inclination toward the sweet, noodle dish. With Valentine’s Day being this past weekend, I thought that it would be the perfect time to show myself some love and treat me to a great dish of pad thai, which I haven’t had for a pretty long time. I took a chance and decided to try Thai Place’s take on pad thai after hearing from a few people how much they liked the restaurant. Plus, I liked the fact that they had a tofu option in lieu of meat.

Because I didn’t want to get caught out after dark without a date on Valentine’s Day, I took myself for a very early afternoon outing. I was really excited to try the tofu pad thai, but decided to try the tofu satay appetizer before jumping into the main course. I am so glad that I did. The tofu was perfectly prepared: crunchy outside with a soft inside. The peanut sauce that came with it was the perfect way to enjoy the dish. Plus, my little cousin, who was my date for the afternoon, seemed to enjoy it as well. The best part was that we were given 6 skewers of tofu, which was a whole lot! Now when it comes to the pad thai I will be honest, I have had better. Much better. But, I will blame it on the fact that we went on Valentine’s Day. They were probably expecting a large rush that evening and didn’t have time to give my pad thai the proper attention that it needed. I’m reaching here, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, check out the pictures below along with my descriptions to get the full details from my visit to Thai Place.

Tofu Satay: I loved this dish! It was my favorite part of the dinner. If I hadn't ordered it, my visit to Thai Place would have been a complete let down. So, I guess you could say that it saved the day. The tofu had the perfect crunchy outer layer while the inside was fluffy and soft. The accompanying peanut sauce and cucumber salad just added to the perfectness of this dish.

So, here's the tofu pad thai that utterly disappointed me. I could've lived with, what seemed to be, dehydrated chunks of tofu that littered the dish. But add on top of that a sauce that had that kind of day-old taste to it, and I just couldn't bring myself to give this dish even one thumb up. After falling head over heels for the tofu satay, I was very surprised when I saw the soggy tofu that was in the pad thai. What was up with that?!?

So, although I really did not like the pad thai, I shared this one last picture of the dish because it was a pretty awesome shot. But don't be fooled, the tofu pad thai is not your friend.
