Ethos Offers the Best Vegan Brunch with its Breakfast Burrito, French Toast, and Biscuits & Gravy

A few weeks ago, a follower of my Facebook page reached out to me and asked if we could meet up and have a chat at one of my favorite restaurants. Sure! I responded. That was the easy part. Selecting the restaurant was the hard part, because whatever place I chose would either confirm my prowess as a foodie or completely invalidate this idea that I have of myself (and that I hope others have of me). There were so many unanswered questions: would I take her to a vegan restaurant, a vegetarian restaurant, or to a regular restaurant with vegan and/or vegetarian dishes? Would we go for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner? Whatever place I chose, it had to be a great representative of me. It took some time for me to come to my senses, but when I did, Ethos Vegan Kitchen was waiting right there for me, right under my nose.

Ethos Vegan Kitchen is my hands down go-to place for great vegan food. They get it right every single time I visit. This may sound a bit weird, but these reasons were exactly why I didn’t want to take my newfound Facebook friend there. I wanted her to try something new and different– I had already assumed that she too had made Ethos one of her favorite spots. Plus, I’d written multiple times about the place like here. I wanted to try a new place that I could write a fresh blog post about. Two birds… After turning my wheels a bit longer, I decided to go ahead and simply ask her if she ever visited Ethos. To my surprise, the answer was no. I would later find out that she had, in fact, never eaten at a vegan restaurant. These new facts mixed with Ethos‘ amazing brunch menu, made it the absolute only option, especially if I wanted to hold onto my foodie crown.

Ethos already has a great menu for lunch and dinner, but when it comes to brunch they seem to take things up a few more notches. Here’s a little snippet of items you can find on the Saturday and Sunday brunch menu: tofu scramble, mimosas, home fries, pancakes, and this is only the beginning. The decision had already been made for me: it would be brunch at Ethos.

Whenever I’m going to a new place or I’m introducing a place to someone, I always like to order a number of different dishes. Once I was kindly given the reigns to order for the table, of which I took with great seriousness, I ordered a variety of items that really exhibit the thing that makes Ethos so great in the first place, which is their ability to take regular food usually infused with meat and transition it into a meat-free, vegan dish that is just as tasty as its meaty rival. Here’s what I went with: cinnamon rolls, breakfast burrito, biscuits & gravy, and french toast.

The ladies that I had the honor of spending those few hours with at Ethos, absolutely loved it! They were amazed that no meat products or by-products were used in the food. After trying the french toast for the first time, I have to admit that I too was a bit astonished at how they pulled off close-to-perect french toast without the nice dip in egg.

Be sure to take a look at the photos below for descriptions and more from my visit to Ethos.

Since my amazing trip to DC's Woodlands Vegan Bistro, I have been looking for a vegan cinnamon roll in my hometown that I could find a little joy in. This is going to sound even more dramatic, but Ethos' cinnamon roll gave me the mouth-joy that I was seeking. The cinnamon, the sugar, the perfectly baked dough... it was a heavenly mix.

Unlike the cinnamon roll, I have had the breakfast burrito before. I loved it then, and I will continue to love it. Let's start from the inside and work our way out. The burrito is stuffed with tofu scramble, home fries, and sausage. When I say stuffed, I mean stuffed. When you cut into the burrito, the filling spills out of it, which is absolutely a good thing! The filling is wrapped in a doughy soft tortilla that plays really well with its insides. Then the best part of the show happens, the burrito is then topped, one can also say smothered, with sausage gravy. I had to assure the ladies that everything they were eating was, in fact, vegan. They couldn't believe it!

I just had to give you an inside look at the breakfast burrito! Here's what you're seeing: tofu scramble, home fries, and sausage. This is sooo good. If I could write this in a different language, I most certainly would. It deserves so much more...

Here's the truth: I have never had "regular" biscuits & gravy. By regular, I mean the biscuits & gravy with meat. It just always seemed like the wrong thing to put into my body. I love biscuits; it was the gravy that gave me great pause. But on this occasion, I just had to try it especially since all the things that concerned me in the traditional dish were completely eradicated in this one. Ethos' take on this dish was really good. The biscuits had a different consistency than ones made with milk. It was more crumbly than doughy, which I liked.

Here's a close up of the biscuits and gravy. Looks good, right!

Ahhh, french toast. French toast is probably one of my favorite breakfast items, which is probably why I was both excited and a bit hesitant to order the dish at Ethos. Their cinnamon raisin french toast was topped with strawberries and came with two types of syrup: maple and agave. I didn't need either. This is when you know the french toast is really good! The slices of toast melted in my mouth and were so flavorful. Out of all of the dishes that we ate that afternoon, I am looking forward to returning to try this one again the most.
